The Atlanta Chapter of The Recording Academy sponsored three high school students from Georgia to attend GRAMMY Camp, which took place July 12–26 at the University of Southern California.
The Bobbie Bailey Foundation Scholarship provided the funds for the students to attend GRAMMY Camp. This year's students from the Atlanta Chapter market were: Daniel Clark, the Howard School; Ramond Harris, North Atlanta High School; and Edward Jay Jackson, Grady High School.
The Atlanta Chapter offers internships for college students preparing for careers in the music business. All participants must be studying music or a music industry-related major and be preparing for a career in the music industry.
The Atlanta Chapter is currently accepting applications for fall 2008 semester interns, spring 2009 semester interns and GRAMMY U campus representatives.

The GRAMMY University Network is a unique and fast-growing community of college students who are pursuing a career in the music industry. The Recording Academy created GRAMMY U to help prepare students for careers in the recording industry through networking, educational programs and performance opportunities. GRAMMY U is designed to enhance students' current academic curriculum with access to recording industry professionals to give an "out of classroom" perspective on the recording industry.
Members of GRAMMY U enjoy many of the benefits offered to The Academy's voting, associate and affiliate members, but at a quarter of the cost of membership. Annual membership in GRAMMY U is $25, compared to the $100 membership.

In 1967, members of the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy approached prominent
members of the Atlanta music community about becoming members of their Chapter.
At the time, the Atlanta area community included such artists as Ray Charles, Otis
Redding, James Brown, Little Richard, Gladys Knight, Brenda Lee, Billy Joe Royal,
Joe South, Tommy Roe and the Classics IV, along with the burgeoning activity of
the southern rock scene of Capricorn Records.
Given the prominence of its local artists and the region's unique niche on the national
music scene, the Atlanta recording community believed it merited its own Recording
Academy Chapter. Visionaries including Bill Lowery, Phil Walden, Sam Wallace, Buddy
Buie, Wade Pepper, Gwen Kesler and Mary Tallent were determined to make a statement
about their region's uniquely rich cultural heritage.

Over the last few years the music scene in the Southeast, with Atlanta as its hub,
continues to nurture a diverse music community. One of the most important changes
has been Atlanta's emergence as a prominent power in urban music. The success of
Atlanta's former La Face Records and Def Jam South and today's thriving So So Def,
DARP/ Freeworld, Organized Noize, BME Recordings, Disturbing Tha Peace and Big Oomp
Records, has been remarkable. The emerging urban music scene has been home to TLC,
Outkast, Ciara, Jagged Edge, L'il Jon & Eastside Boyz, Ying Yang Twins, L'il Scrappy,
T.I., Goodie Mob, Bow Wow, 112, India.Arie, Arrested Development, Tony Rich, Kelly
Price, Usher, Monica, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Faith Evans, Morris Day and
Ludacris, to name a few.
The pop, rock, and alternative scenes continue in a grand Southern tradition, having
produced such pioneers as Athens' R.E.M., B-52's, and Matthew Sweet. Atlanta has
been home to the Black Crowes, Drivin 'N Cryin, Indigo Girls, Collective Soul, Butch
Walker & Marvelous 3, Shawn Mullins, Sister Hazel, John Mayer, Evan & Jaron and
Angie Aparo. Top producers Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, Jazze Pha, Brendan O'Brien
and Butch Walker give the top names in the business a great reason to record in
Atlanta. Many artists have relocated to Atlanta including the illustrious Sir Elton
John.

From the multi-GRAMMY winning and celebrated Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to our gospel
greats such as Dottie Peoples, contemporary Christian artists Third Day and Casting
Crowns, to country's finest including Travis Tritt, Mark Wills, Trisha Yearwood
and newcomers Sugarland, Atlanta has either bred such luminaries or they have chosen
to become a part of our collective and take advantage of the sophisticated infrastructure
developing around the Atlanta music community.
The Atlanta Chapter continues to work toward maintaining a membership that reflects
the diversity of its music community by providing engaging educational, professional
and social opportunities that invite the participation its members. The Chapter's
long-term goal is to offer a nurturing environment for the Southeast recording community,
to maximize the leadership talents of the many volunteers who are the heart of the
organization, to build coalitions with other arts organizations that share a common
vision of the importance of the arts and arts education, and to provide quality,
cutting-edge educational opportunities for its members.
