Memphis Chapter offices on historic Beale Street
|
Since its inception in 1973, the Memphis Chapter has had two major goals: to pull
the music community together by developing local pride in the rich musical heritage
of the region, and to offer opportunities to young people interested in pursuing
careers in the music industry by providing extensive educational programs.
The Independent Music Forum is concluded with a showcase that exposes independent
talent to national writers and industry executives
|
Originally located on historic Beale Street, the Memphis Chapter now has a new home
in another downtown Memphis neighborhood known as the South Main Historic District.
The Memphis Chapter officially opened its doors on July 29, 2005, showcasing the
architecture and music-related art in the new space. Capturing the charm of the
bygone area, the neighborhood includes galleries, restaurants, shops, and is a mere
block away from the National Civil Rights museum. Also nearby are the Gibson Guitar
factory, Smithsonian's Rock 'n Soul Exhibit, the Blues Foundation headquarters,
legendary Sun Studios, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Autozone Baseball
Park, the FedEx Forum (the Memphis Grizzlies' NBA arena) and the mighty Mississippi
River.
Even though the Memphis Chapter is located in Memphis, it services the entire region's
music industry from New Orleans and Lafayette, La., to all of Mississippi,
Arkansas, and Missouri.

The Chapter nourishes the region's music scene in a variety of ways, including many
professional development and networking events. A wide range of programs are scheduled
on an annual basis to help the recording community stay informed of current issues,
trends, and The Recording Academy's national initiatives. Included in our programming
is a Demo Review, a regional GRAMMY Showcase, the Independent Music Forum, studio
education events, screenings of national preservation projects, a free MusiCares
Musicians Health Clinic, GRAMMY in the Schools (a music industry career day for
high school students), and networking events providing members an opportunitiy to
get to know each other. These events are held in various locations including Memphis;
New Orleans and Lafayette, La.; St. Louis, Springfield and Branson, Mo.; Little
Rock, Ark.; and Jackson and Oxford, Miss.
In the early years, Memphis had a musically rich community with independent labels
such as Sun (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis), Stax (Otis Redding, Booker T. & The
MGs), and Hi (Al Green, Ann Peebles). Current artists from the region that now spread
their sound across the nation include Saliva, the North Mississippi All-Stars, Better
Than Ezra, Evanescence, and the Porch Ghouls.

Schools
|
Whether it's presenting top industry professionals at educational programs, hosting
fun events where Chapter members can come together to network among their peers,
providing live music at our board meetings in order for the current leaders in the
industry to meet emerging artists, or documenting the historical significance of
the region, the Memphis Chapter continues to serve the region's music community
and the community at large.
